starting the beach season early: march 18, 2010

thank goodness for spring! we were lucky to get a few warm days in early this year and now that i work up in gloucester i took advantage and left the office early for my first beach trip of the year.


it's amazing how the landscape has changed on my all-too-familiar long beach- tons of sand has been washed out and the beach is now littered with rocks and sea glass. towards the gloucester end of the beach, an old shipwreck has been unearthed- such a fascinating site! from what i've heard, it's the remains of an old schooner from maine- over 100 years old and constructed using "trunnel" or "tree nail fastenings." the last time the wreck was made visible was after the 1991 "perfect storm." check it out:



on the other end of the beach some old trees have had their roots unearthed. it's interesting to think what the beach would have looked like with trees growing on it, too bad tourism had to get in the way of nature:




there were also the familiar sites to be found at my favorite beach, all much appreciated and duly missed over the course of this long winter:



this day kept the beautiful sites rolling with a perfect sunset over gloucester harbor. i drove around town trying to find the perfect spot to capture it, and found that every spot felt like the perfect spot:





all in all, after a lovely dinner at passports, it was quite simply a perfect day!
